Due date- December 13-14 (13 for A days and 14 for B days)!!!!!
Practice Embedding Quotes - Detail Sentences!
Read the following quotes from "On Compassion:"
"Raw humanity offends our sensibilities."
"We want to protect ourselves from an awareness of rags with voices that make no sense and scream forth in inarticulate rage."
"Ladies in high-heeled shoes pick their way through poverty and madness."
"We cannot deny the existence of the helpless as their presence grows."
"It is impossible to insulate ourselves against what is at our very doorstep."
As a small group, write a sentence that successfully integrates at least 3 quotes from above into your own sentence structure. Write this sentence on a plain sheet of paper to project for the class.
Example: In her description of the French shop owner's "offering," Ascher noted that many other business owners would have "[chased him] from their midst," using "expletives and threats" in order to "rid" themselves of the "troublesome presence" of the homeless (par. 8-9).

Watch
Watch the video about the Panama City Mayor, Greg Brudnicki, and his views toward helping out our fellow man and add it to your 5 column-chart.
What is the difference between the news article and most of the other pieces of reading on your 5-column organizer? Which piece of reading is most like the news article? Add both of these texts to your 5 column chart.
Argument!
On paper, make two arguments for the question: Is it a moral obligation to practice philanthropy according to Nye/Brudnicki?
One argument needs to take Brudnicki's view on kindness. Use quotes from the video to back up your case. The other argument needs to take Nye's viewpoint on this subject. Use quotes from the poem to back up your case. Also, you may integrate quotes from other essays, stories, or songs that we have read in order to make your point. The more authors you have on your side, the more convincing you may sound.
I will divide you up into Brudnicki and Nye groups. You will not know which side you are on until I pull you into the middle- so make sure both of your arguments are sound. I will bring you into the middle to argue your side of the question. The rest of the class will vote on the group that made the best points, used the best evidence, and explained their points the best.
